"Cops" wasn't Canceled, it just Mutated

🔹🔹Much was made about Cops getting canceled in 2020, but it never died. Cops is currently airing its 36th season and the latest iteration of the genre-"On Patrol: Live"-is a ratings juggernaut. Do these shows provide a check on the police? Or are they just glorified PR reps? And are some cops performing for the camera?

I agree with much of what you're saying, but blaming the police's mere presence for a man escaping I'm high speed leading to a high-speed chase, is dumb. If he didn't escape, there wouldn't be a high speed chase, you can't blame the police for that?

I'm not blaming him for being afraid, I'm blaming him for speeding with a child in his car. The police actually did the right thing. Let's say a group of 4 people hang out, they all have no race, but one of them escapes the second they see the police. Who do you think have done something illegal?

I'm 0% surprised that a cop show for conservatives is named after a term for royalty. I have been saying for years that if modern american conservatives were around for the revolutionary war they would have fully backed the monarchy. An unquestioning allegiance to the wealthy and the systems that uphold them, a fanatical worship of the status quo, and a deep, deep cowardice surrounding authority? Old king george woulda loved them!

I'm from Spokane and also took part in the peaceful and organized BLM protests in Spokane... Well at least they were peaceful and organized until Ozzie's sheriff's started tear gassing and bean bagging the crowd out of nowhere without warning before chasing us through the streets into the night. Super convenient too that the news didn't cover literally any of the peaceful protest and only flipped on cameras once the chaos the sheriff's started, began.

I'm watching The Wire with my conservative, pro-police, brother in law right now. Our views are diametrically opposed in almost all ways and it's been very interesting to watch this for the first time with someone like him. Each episode takes twice as long to get through because we keep pausing and discussing. However much we disagree on everything, we still both love America's Sweetheart, Omar. I asked him yesterday what he thought The Game was. To me, from the beginning, it seemed obvious that The Game is capitalism. How it's like this malignant organism that hijacks all resources and fights to the death to resist change, up to and including disguising itself as its own detractors, then profiting from the deceit. His take was that The Game is that of cat and mouse, but not just cops v criminals, but also like the grasping, violent bidding for hierarchy/power present in everyone's lives. It's strange how similar our takes were, while still being so far apart. I think he's missing that the reason many of these people are grasping for power is because without any communal or social support, the only way to be safe is to be powerful/feared, and the only real tool of self-empowerment under capitalism is inhuman, unthinking, uncaring, capital. He just thinks it can't be helped and is the bleakness of all human nature to be selfish and violent and predatory. He was raised catholic, so no surprise there. When Hamsterdam was brought low and demolished, I was surprised to find out that he was also upset about it, and thought it could have been leading somewhere great. However immediately afterward, when Avon is busted, our reactions were so so different. While I was like, this is so fucking hollow, nothing changed, nothing has been accomplished here, it's just going to be Marlo next, and somebody else after him because none of the actual issues have been addressed, my brother in law was like... well I'm sad Hamsterdam was ruined, but hey at least they caught one murderous bad guy so things are getting better. Smh. So far the show has started to really highlight a question I have about its world - arguably our world. Would these systems be inherently different if they weren't upheld and run primarily by just men.

Mayberry indoctronated me as a kid to the idea the cops are your friend. But when I was older I knew enough when three teens came into my gas station (one with a bloody hand) ans I patched him up trouble was coming. When the cops came two of them boxed him in and told this extremely traumatized overly angry kid and badgered him till he swung first. Then the two cops beat up the kid and threw him into the car. One cop came in looking at the two kids and asking if 'everything was ok?' I stepped in front of him and said everything is fine, their my customers. I could feel the adrenaline in him and he wanted to find some flaw in the reasoning before he finally said OK and left. The kids were all black and the cop was white as am I. By now Id heard so many stories of stupid things going wrong and trapping kids in the system. I just felt in my heart this guy would manhandle the kids and (around 15) till they 'resisted arrest'. Just as an if your interested I worked nights and had a great relationship with the police. Id let them use the restroom (Store locked up at night) and sell them hot coffee and snacks at any hour. One time one asked what Id do if he robbed the place and I waved a hand at him and said if your robbing me there is more wrong with this world I need to worry about. One (Long ago) time a guy showed up with a gun (didnt use it) I felt the police would take care of things (I hid in the cinder block back room with a customer till we got an all clear) back then q cop walked up to the guy (visible so he didnt surprise him) He said something like Hey buddy your making people scared waving the gun around gave him a moment to put two and two together and the guy held his hands up. They took his gun and took him to the station. Now they would probably shoot him and say he was comin right for me. Sorry for rambling.

We beed to push police surveillance further and work on drone arrays that also survey their activities. The more perspective we have that any speciffic officer has control of that still allows for an spectrum of scalable anonymity, the better. That, in public, we don't have have live access to the cameras, is a missed opportunity and its certainly not from a lack of funding or capability.
